Paul Peter is a Consultant Endocrinologist at County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust, one of the largest hospitals in the North East. While his research interests include pumps, transition diabetes and obesity, these days his passion revolves mainly around fostering greater integration between primary, intermediate and secondary care to bring about seamless care for patients with diabetes or endocrine issues. He has set up “consultant supervised, DSN-heavy, IT-driven” community clinics across the Durham Dales area and continues to develop this whilst being part of the unselected medical on call service in secondary care. He believes that committed involvement in general medicine is essential for specialists to understand deficiencies in service delivery, and thus attempt to bring about changes in both “front of house” and “back of house” care within secondary care.
Outside diabetes, as the Care Group director for General Medicine including Elderly Care and Emergency Department at the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust , his main role is to help improve engagement and develop healthy relationships between clinicians, managers and other Health care Professionals, which he thinks is key to a healthy, happy and functioning Health Service anywhere in the world.
